KASUMIGASEKI COMMON GATE (2)

Landscape Art

The stone walls of Edo Castle, once standing in the path of traffic development, were dismantled. Originally erected to ward off intruders during the Warring States period, these stones have been repurposed into a majestic staircase where pedestrians now freely traverse, over 400 years later. Adorning the staircase are etchings of old maps, ukiyo-e prints, photographs spanning from the Edo period to the present day, and the Western calendar. Those passing through here become time travelers, seamlessly journeying between epochs.

COLLAGE OF PAST & NOW

Various shadows of the city that are disappearing due to redevelopment are photographed, recorded, and carved like real shadows on the chairs of the newly reborn city, and the date and time of the photo shoot are also noted. On a good day, it is a collage of time when the shadows of the present overlap the shadows of the past. One of the chairs was installed without any inscription. I will save this for the next development.
