この地は旧日本軍海兵隊基地で多くの海軍施設があったが、そのほとんどが破壊された。戦時中、海で命を落とした人々へのオマージュとして、佐伯の海の風景や船をモチーフにした舗装、水辺、植栽が施されている。使用された材料もこの地域の石灰岩やコンクリートを主体とし、公園中央のリングに沿って桜が植えられ、過去と未来、人間と自然、人間と人間の架け橋となる戦艦と同じ鋼材のアーチモニュメントで平和の環「和」が完成する。植樹は、地元の子どもたちが平和と生命あふれる未来の森の成長を願って行われ、桜の足下にはタイムカプセルも埋設されている。

The site, once a Japanese Marine Corps base rich in naval history, saw many of its facilities destroyed. In homage to those who perished at sea during the war, the design incorporates elements inspired by Saiki’s seascape and maritime vessels. Pavements, water features, and landscaping reflect these themes. Local limestone and concrete dominate the materials, while cherry trees lining the park’s central ring complete the “Wa” peace circle. At the heart of the park stands an arch monument forged from the same steel as historic battleships, symbolizing continuity between past and future, humanity and nature, and among people themselves. The planting of cherry trees was a collaborative effort involving local children, envisioned to nurture a future forest teeming with peace and vitality. Beneath the cherry trees, a time capsule was buried, embodying hopes for a lasting legacy of harmony and renewal.
