karesansuiとは、岩と砂だけでつくられた日本庭園の様式である。山々や水の流れる風景を、実際には水を使うことなく、できる限り無駄を省いて自然界を表現している。日本最古の庭園書「作庭記」によれば、石の配置は記憶をたよりに実際の自然風景を思い出して、あそこはこうであった、ここはどうであったなどと、思い合わせて立てるべきであると書かれている。ここはモーターサイクル愛好家の為の都心のパーキング。立石僧ならぬライダーは、今日一日走ってきた都会の風景を思い出しながらバイクをここに止め、愛車を雨水から守る為にカバーをかける。それがまるで自然石のように見えた瞬間に、現代の枯山水が誕生する。万物は流転するという仏教思想がある。アスファルトの原料は砂利と原油という自然物であり、元を正せばモーターサイクルも元々は鉱物であった。この世の全てのものは、常に居場所や形を変えて、流れ、移り変わっていく。世俗に執着してしまう我々の身は自然に比べればちっぽけな存在である。都市の喧噪の中に見出されるkaresansui parkが織りなす日本の美は、現代社会に生きる私たちの心をユーモアをもって癒してくれる。
“Karesansui” is a Japanese garden style composed solely of rocks and sand, meticulously crafted to mimic the natural world while conserving water. According to the Sakuteiki, Japan’s oldest gardening manual, stone placement should evoke memories of actual landscapes, recreating scenes of mountains and flowing water. In the heart of the city center lies a parking lot for motorcycle enthusiasts. Here, riders, far from being contemplative monks, park their motorcycles, reflecting on the urban landscapes they traversed that day. They cover their cherished bikes to shield them from rain, transforming the scene into a modern karesansui (dry landscape garden). This creation evokes Buddhist principles of impermanence, where all things flow and transform. Asphalt, the base material, originates from natural sources like gravel and crude oil, embodying nature’s perpetual change. Amidst the bustling city, this karesansui park weaves a quintessentially Japanese beauty, offering solace and wit to our modern society.
