HASO

I was born on a remote island in Oita Prefecture, a place that I consider my original landscape. It’s where I first became aware of my surroundings as soon as I entered the world. This place holds my diverse roots deeply embedded within it. The word “HASO” likely originates from the island dialect, where it denotes a wharf. HASO serves as an infrastructure that not only protects lives from natural forces like high tides but also teems with fish and crabs, where children and adults alike swim together. It feels like a vast playground adrift in the sea.
This aspect likely influenced many of Danzuka’s works, which often bridge the gap between nature and human life. Recently, I discovered that the stone HASO dates back to the Edo period, used as a boundary wall for a fishpond where the lord would release sea bream for recreational fishing. This landscape has always been associated with playfulness. HASO remains integral to the FUJIHAKU® project, embodying this connection between nature and human interaction.
